Tyreek Hill Arrest Takes a Turn: Officer’s Suspension Come To Light

Tyreek Hill was put in handcuffs just hours before his season debut in week one against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He not only mentioned the event following an 80-yard touchdown, celebrating with a handcuff gesture, but he talked thoroughly about the situation in the following days.

    Tyreek Hill Pre-Game Detaining

Miami Dolphins superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained in South Florida for reckless driving. Hill, a player familiar with legal troubles, has previously faced arrests for domestic violence, child abuse, and assault, along with multiple lawsuits. The Dolphins acknowledged the incident, releasing a statement regarding the situation.

This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.

Hill finished the game with 130 yards and one touchdown.

Tyreek Hill Officer Bodycam Causes Outrage

Miami-Dade police released bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s September 8 detainment after public pressure. The video shows Hill’s black McLaren speeding at approximately 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. He quickly pulled over, handed over his ID and paperwork without resistance, admitted his mistake, and requested the ticket to avoid being late to nearby Hard Rock Stadium.

However, the situation escalated when Hill attempted to roll up his window. Officer Danny Torres demanded he lower it, and when Hill only partially complied, the officers ordered him out of the vehicle. As Hill exited, officers forcefully restrained him, pinning him to the ground. Hill was heard telling agent Drew Rosenhaus on a phone call that he was being arrested.

Hill later explained he tried to keep the window up to avoid drawing attention, saying, “If I let my window down, people will notice and start taking pictures. I didn’t want to create a scene.” He added, “Does that justify their actions? Absolutely not, but I wish I handled things differently.”

The Dolphins responded, expressing concern over the “overly aggressive conduct” towards Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith. Campbell and Smith, who arrived to help Hill, were also confronted, with Campbell being handcuffed at the scene. The consensus from watchers was that the officer had unreasonable conduct.

    Officers History Of Suspensions

Records from Miami-Dade County reveal that Officer Danny Torres, who detained Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, has a troubling history of misconduct. According to documents reviewed by NBC, Torres had accumulated six suspensions and multiple reprimands before his encounter with Hill.

Between 2014 and 2019, Torres was suspended for a total of 50 days. This includes two separate five-day suspensions in February 2014 and February 2016, another two in September 2016, a 20-day suspension in October 2018, and a 10-day suspension in June 2019. In addition to these suspensions, Torres, a 27-year veteran, has received four written reprimands between March 1999 and September 2020. NBC also reports that Torres has faced multiple complaints during his time on the force, with eight being classified as “sustained,” including incidents involving excessive force and improper use of his body camera.

Since Hill’s arrest, Torres has been placed on administrative duties as investigations into his conduct continue.

    Final Thoughts

As I said when the bodycam footage was released.

“The American police force is built upon a racist structure. Police disproportionately patrol black and brown neighborhoods, unfairly search black and brown people during traffic stops, and unjustifiably murder minorities more than white Americans.

Tyreek Hill posed the question, ” What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill” and to me, it feels like an unfortunately easy answer. The police officers involved in the situation should have a full-scale investigation of their previous arrests, and likely should never wield a badge and gun ever again.”

A full-scale investigation did take place and showed a disgustingly consistent history. The fact that Daniel Tores is still a police officer perfectly encapsulates the problems with the United States policing structure.
