Winter Whale Watch Week returns to the Oregon Coast Dec. 27-31
DEPOE BAY, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Oregon State Parks will once again host Winter Whale Watch Week at 15 sites along the Oregon Coast Wednesday, Dec. 27 to Sunday, Dec. 31. Every year, thousands of gray whales migrate south through Oregon’s waters at the end of December, and state parks invites visitors to the coast to see their journey.
Philomath girls hit on all cylinders in hoops rout over Pendleton
Just 52 seconds into Thursday’s girls basketball game, visiting Pendleton had a pair of 3-pointers to its credit for an early 6-2 lead. Could it be a sign of things to come?. After all, Pendleton came into the contest after a drive from the other end of the state and possessed an element of the unknown. Waters on the rise
Heavy rains from the predicted “Atmospheric River” have brought local waterways, lakes and estuaries to the point of overflow Tuesday. A quick drive around the area shows dramatic water level rise. Places like the Siletz river have turned to a torrent of brown as churning waters mix with mud as it heads to the Pacific ocean.

Commercial Dungeness Crab Starts on Half of Oregon Coast
(Newport, Oregon) – After low meat yields delayed the commercial crabbing season on the Oregon coast, a little more than half of the region's waters are set to open on December 16. Originally expected to open December 1, the Dungeness crab fishery was delayed as a whole, and now the area from Cape Foulweather to the California border will get the green light. Fort Hoskins projects among statewide grant recipients
The Oregon Heritage Commission has awarded $381,262 in grants to 33 organizations throughout the state, including two with local ties. Benton County was awarded $7,170 to complete projects related to Fort Hoskins, which is located about 12 miles northwest of Philomath. The money will be used to complete plans for a festival celebration, update interpretive signage and to repair the chimney at the Commander’s House.
Georgia-Pacific Hosts AFPA at Award-Winning Plant
I had the opportunity to host the American Forest & Paper Association at Georgia-Pacific Packaging & Cellulose’s Toledo, OR containerboard mill and Juno waste recovery facility. Juno technology was a 2022 recipient of AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 Innovation in Sustainability award for its ability to significantly increase recovery rates. Paper fibers, plastics, and metals can be recycled and circulated back into the economy with this technology.

From December 5, 2023 at 2 p.m. to December 6, 2023 at 2 a.m., diluted sewage was released to Devils Lake at the Holmes Road Boat Ramp.
