New recycling center coming to Lucas County

The Lucas County Commissioners approved a contract to build a Materials Recovery Facility in south Toledo. Currently, waste is shipped 90 miles away to be processed.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A new recycling center will be coming to Lucas County.

The Lucas County Commissioners approved a ground-breaking agreement Wednesday with Closed Looped Partners to design and build a new facility.

The Materials Recovery Facility will receive, process and market recyclables. It will be built on 15 acres at Kuhlman Drive and South Avenue near I-75 in south Toledo.

The facility will help address the growing need for sustainable waste management in the city and reduce the amount of waste sent to the Hoffman Road landfill. The current practice is shipping waste 90 miles to another facility to be processed, Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken said.

"The investment in a new Materials Recovery Facility will play a key role to meet the waste reduction and recycling goals established in the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District’s 15-year management plan,” County Commissioner Lisa Sobecki said.

Lucas County was awarded a $7 million grant to complete an environmental cleanup of a portion of the property.
