DENVER (KDVR) — The Thornton Police Department said it has arrested a student who allegedly made threats toward Shadow Ridge Middle School.

According to a letter Principal Matt Oehlert sent to families on Monday, the school first learned of potential threats made by the student last week and then additional threatening statements were made over the weekend.

Oehlert’s letter went on to address rumors that the student had brought a gun to school.

“I want to clarify that at this time, all of our information indicates that this student did not have a weapon at school,” the letter to families said.

In the letter, Oehlert said the student is facing legal and disciplinary issues and will not be on school property during the investigation. He also said students could expect to see extra security at the school as a precaution.

“Please know that we want to protect the children in our communities as well and we do take all threats seriously,” the police department said in a statement.
