In 2012, there were a total of 1,104 JCPenney locations open across the country . That number has since decreased to just over 600 as of June 10th, 2024. A company spokesperson attributed many of the closures to the chain's inability to "continue our current lease terms" at affected locations (per a statement obtained by ).

"Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market. We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Mobile location throughout the year."
