Convicted killer Chase Griffith Met Police

A woman who helped her brother flee to the Caribbean after he gunned down a man in the street has been jailed for 30 months.

Chase Griffith, 23, shot dead Sam Brown after an outdoor party in Cheney Row Park in Waltham Forest, before putting into motion a plan to try to get away with murder .

Griffith disposed of the tracksuit he was wearing and changed his distinctive hairstyle, before asking his older sister, Denise David, to book him a flight to St Lucia .

The killer was able to flee the UK for the family home in the Caribbean and remained there for 19 weeks before he was extradited back to face justice.

Griffith was found guilty at trial of murder, and was jailed last year for life with a minimum term of 30 years in prison .

His sister, now 26, was charged with perverting the course of justice and was found guilty by a jury, having attempted to claim she was not liable for her brother’s flight from justice.

    Sam Brown (Met Police)

On Monday, Recorder Alistair Webster KC sentenced David to 30 months in prison.

He said she bought the plane ticket “out of a sense of family loyalty”, but added: “It must have been clear to you that you were helping him to escape justice.

“The interests of the public and Sam Brown’s family clearly came a long way down your list of priorities.”

Griffith and Mr Brown had both attended the party on July 23, 2022, and a man was stabbed in the early hours of the next morning.

Griffith pulled out a gun in the aftermath and shot Mr Brown, believing he was in some way responsible for the stabbing.

Mr Brown, 28, from Walthamstow, managed to get into his car and drive a short distance before losing consciousness. He later died in hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest.Griffith fled to his home in Southgate, north London, and on 27 July he boarded the flight to St Lucia, where his family hail from.

David told police where her brother had gone, and evidence collected showed she had bought the ticket.

The killer could not be questioned by British police about the shooting because he was in the Caribbean, and he was extradited in December 2022.

The court heard David, a mother-of-one whose partner is serving a prison sentence himself, suffered childhood trauma and became “protective of her younger brother, not wanting him to go through anything like that”.

David will serve up to half her 30-month prison sentence before being released on licence.
