Caleb Osorio of Woodland recently received the Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship from the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), an award given to exemplary students accepted into higher education and planning to study law enforcement, labor relations or related fields.

The Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship, established in 1999, honors former IUPA and New York City police officer Edward Kiernan’s work to improve law enforcement officers and their family’s lives, a press release stated.

“The future of America rests in the hands of our youth who choose to pursue careers that serve the public interest. We owe it to future generations to support young people who select to dedicate their lives to protecting our communities,” IUPA President Sam Cabral said in the press release.

Recipients of the scholarship must have a parent or guardian associated with the International Union of Police Associations. Additionally, they must submit their testing scores and a letter of recommendation by an official from the applicant’s school, a press release by IUPA stated.

The IUPA is a chartered labor union that represents law enforcement personnel nationwide. To learn more about the union, visit iupa.org
