With a simplified defense, key returning players and a hunger to outperform expectations, the Prairie High School Falcons are poised to make a significant impact in their league this year.
At the helm is Junior Miller, who is in his first year as head coach following his stint as an assistant coach during the 2022-23 school year. One of the most significant changes Miller has implemented is simplifying the defense, making it easier for the team to grasp concepts and execute plays without overthinking.
“We’ve gone a lot more simple than I think they’ve done in years past,” Miller explained. “Less thinking on the field means more flying around, making plays and getting to the ball.”
The Falcons are projected to finish fourth in their league, a position Miller accepts as it comes with less pressure and allows the team to exceed expectations.
“I think a lot of people have us projected fourth right now in the league, which is a great spot for us because there’s not a lot of pressure right now, and a lot of expectations aren’t set high for us honestly … and [the team] knows that we’re better than where we’re at, and we’re just gonna have to prove that on the field at each week we show up and play our game,” he said.
Key players to watch this season include senior quarterback and kicker Isaac Watson, as well as Preston Hill, a standout running back and linebacker. Cameron McCray also shows promise in both the running back and linebacker positions. The team’s strength lies in its depth and leadership, with a large number of players committed to the program since November.
“We’ve got a young group, but the young group [includes] a bunch of leaders. There’s not a lot of guys in missing practices or missing film sessions. … We’ve got 12 per position. I think that’s gonna help us in the long run for a long season,” Miller said.
Miller said he is excited to be back at Prairie as head coach, leading the Falcons with the support of a dedicated coaching staff and a strong group of players.
