Hearing Thursday for major rezoning
It doesn’t resemble a full-scale industrial area, lacking loud machinery, smokestacks or large truck traffic, but a section of Riverside Drive and East Pine Street is actually zoned for such use — which officials want to alter. City planners are recommending that 14 parcels with 12 different addresses along those and other streets in Mount Airy be rezoned from their present M-1 (industrial) classification to B-2 (General Business). Surry County commissioners recently learned area farmers seem to be doing well — at least the ones growing and selling plants at local markets. Joseph Zalescik, who oversees the county farmer’s markets, gave an annual update to the board last week regarding the markets, including that the Dobson Farmers Market was opening early this year because those vendors had a lot of plants ready to go and were ready to get them to the public. ...

Pilot Mountain bustles with Mayfest
For more than 40 years, with some time off during the pandemic, Pilot Mountain and Mayfest have been offering area residents and visitors alike a chance to enjoy a picturesque downtown with that great view of the mountain. Folks at Mayfest could shop through arts and crafts offerings while enjoying live music and sorting through lots of options to find their favorite food truck choice. The Friends of the Charles H. Stone Memorial Library in Pilot Mountain hosted a “Love the Library Tea” on Saturday that also doubled as the end of a silent online auction with proceeds from both events benefiting the library.
