According to the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, there was $23,951,539 worth of legal marijuana and marijuana products sold throughout August. This is over $1 million more than the then-record setting $22,861,337 sold last month. The previous monthly high was $21.7 million set in August 2023.

The majority of sales were for “usable cannabis”, which is dried marijuana flower, prerolls, shake, etc., with sales at $13.8 million. Concentrates were the next biggest catagory with $6.3 million in sales in August. In terms of infused products such as edibles and capsules, there was $3.7 million in sales.
The average price per gram of dried marijuana flower increased by just $0.01, to $7.21.

The year-to-date total is now$161,928,423 from 2,998,900 transactions.

Maine legalized recreational marijuana in 2016, allowing adults 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces. However, due to regulatory delays, the first retail outlets didn’t open until 2020. Recreational marijuana sales are taxed at 10%, with an additional 8% excise tax on marijuana edibles, while medical marijuana is taxed at 5.5%.

In May, Maine announced new regulations for marijuana retail outlets, aligning them more with liquor stores. These changes include removing ID checks at store entrances, allowing minors to enter with legal guardians, and permitting product samples.
