Suspect in Georgia high school shooting to appear in court

The 14-year-old accused of killing four people at his Georgia high school in a shooting this week is set to make his first appearance in court Friday morning.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said in a post online that the shooter, Colt Gray, will have his first court appearance at 8:30 a.m. He was charged Thursday with four counts of felony murder, one for each death in the Apalachee High School shooting Wednesday.

The GBI said his father , Colin Gray, “knowingly allowed” his son to have the weapon.

According to the teen’s arrest warrant, obtained by The Associated Press, he is accused of using a semiautomatic AR-style rifle to kill two students and two teachers at his school in Winder, less than two hours northeast of Atlanta. Nine others were injured in the shooting.

Colin Gray was arrested and charged with eight counts of cruelty to children, two counts of second-degree murder and four counts of involuntary manslaughter later Thursday.

This is the latest example of prosecutors looking to hold parents responsible if their child commits a school shooting. In April, Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of a school shooter in Michigan, were the first parents in the U.S. to be charged and sentenced for having criminal responsibility in their child’s shooting.

On Wednesday, the FBI revealed Colt Gray had been interviewed last year about previous threats after the agency received several tips about online comments made about committing a school shooting. The FBI said there was no probable cause to arrest or take any other law enforcement action following the interview.

At a campaign rally Wednesday, Vice President Harris went off-script to address the shooting, calling it a “senseless tragedy.” Harris said the country must end its gun violence epidemic “once and for all.”
