A man from The Dalles is charged with second-degree manslaughter for allegedly helping a woman die by suicide.
Joseph Newman appeared in court Friday on a grand jury indictment.
Court documents allege he “unlawfully and intentionally” aided the woman in taking her life.
District Attorney Matthew Ellis called this a unique situation. He said the woman struggled with mental health.
"She had actually sent him a text message indicating the Massachusetts case where a young man took his life at the urging of his girlfriend. I believe both those people were about 18 or 19, so they were fairly young," Ellis said. "But he used a small engine to put it in the cab of a vehicle to pump carbon monoxide into it, and she saw this and wanted to do the same thing."
The judge set Newman’s bail at $10,000.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
