Here's how to find free supplies, haircuts for the start of school in Terrebonne, Lafourche

With the first day of the new semester fast approaching, here’s where to find school supplies and haircuts.

Terrebonne’s first day of school is Monday, Aug. 5, while Lafourche’s is Wednesday, Aug. 7. Many nonprofits and organizations are rallying to get the little tykes ready for their first day.

Shooting Stars organizer Ernest Harvey said that when he was a child, Christmas drives and school supply drives helped his family, and he wants to give back.

“I guess I feel like it’s just our time to do what some people did for us,” he said. “It’s just a good feeling to see people smile or help people out.”

Here’s where school supply drives are being held across Terrebonne and Lafourche:

Saturday, Aug. 3

There will be free school supplies, food, drinks and music from 11 a.m. until supplies run out at the Tru Hustler’s Clubhouse, 1241 Canal Blvd., in Thibodaux, Harvey said.

There will be a school supply giveaway from 11 a.m. to noon at the Coco Marina, 106 Pier 56 Ct., in Cocodrie.

Sunday, August 4

Free haircuts will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and free school supplies from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Mechanicville Gym, 2814 Senator St, in Houma.

“Going back to school is heavy, you know. it costs a lot,” organizer Jalisa Mulligan said. “So I just want to make the weight a little bit lighter for a lot of parents.”

Tuesday, Aug. 6

The LMA will give free haircuts from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the LMA Event Center, 1148 Tiger Dr., in Thibodaux.

Saturday, Aug. 10

Free school supplies, food and music from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Mechanicville Gym, 2814 Senator St, in Houma.

Thursday, August 15

The Terrebonne NAACP will partner with the rapper Master P to give out school supplies to students of Oaklawn Middle School at noon Thursday, Aug. 15, at the school.
