Trolley Tunnel Closure Update: Remains Shut Until At Least December 7th for Riders
In a bid to reduce maintenance costs on its aging fleet of vehicles, SEPTA has inadvertently caused a significant disruption to its trolley services. The trolleys, which are all over 40 years old, were fitted with larger "slider" electrical equipment to extend their operational lifespan. However, these larger components have damaged the overhead wire systems in the tunnel, leading to stranded riders, delays, traffic, and widespread confusion. This decision, ironically driven by uncertainty in long-term transit budgets and funding streams, has thrown commutes into chaos and necessitated emergency capital spending at a critical time.
