The Tennessee General Assembly recognized a Middle Tennessee teenager on Monday who lost both her legs in a crash.
The resolution, SJR0312, will acknowledge Janae Edmondson for her courage and strength as a Tennessean after having her legs amputated after being hit by a car in St. Louis, Missouri.
Janae was in Missouri for a volleyball tournament when the tragedy occurred. The Smyrna teen is a three-sport senior athlete, who verbally committed to playing volleyball right before the crash.
The suspect, 21-year-old Daniel Riley, was charged with assault and other charges for hitting Janae. Police reported that he failed to yield at an intersection, resulting in the serious crash.
Riley was reportedly charged with first degree robbery in 2020 out of St. Louis, released on bond and placed on house arrest until his trial. FOX 17 News found that Riley also violated his GPS monitor 51 times, 10 of them in the same month that Janae was hit and critically hurt.
State officials in Missouri have taken legal action against St. Louis prosecutor Kim Gardner for allegedly failing to do her job by not reprimanding Riley who repeatedly violated his bond conditions.
Janae has received support from all over after the tragedy, including from the Middle Tennessee Volleyball Club and UT Southern. Janae verbally committed to UT Southern, and the university said they will honor Janae's scholarship promise.
A GoFundMe for Janae has raised more than half a million dollars.
