'We're honored to help'
On a Sunday in early April, as the Telluride Ski Resort was about to shut down for a few weeks, another local institution continued chugging along. It was a potent reminder that the Telluride Food Pantry never closes for off-season. Even as it seemed the rest of town was on the brink of shuttering, this reporter watched volunteers restocking the nonprofit’s headquarters, around the corner from the Second Chance Humane Society’s main street shop.
Billy Strings added to blockbuster Bluegrass lineup
The second-best thing about Planet Bluegrass’ eleventh-hour lineup addition is that it’s completely unnecessary. The lineup was already full and finalized, and tickets were nearly sold out, though some single-day Thursday and Sunday tickets and four-day passes are still available. The best thing about the lineup addition is...
Telluride Elks Lodge announces Lael Fruen as Citizen of the Year
Once upon a time, a young couple from the suburbs of Minneapolis traveled West to visit a brand new ski area in Colorado. They went back home, sold all their belongings, and returned to the dusty mining town. The rest, as they say, is history. On Friday, May 3, the...

Girls lacrosse puts up a valiant effort against Aspen
Aspen may have prevailed Tuesday night, May 7, but Telluride — visiting AHS for opening Round-of-24 play in the CHSAA Class 4A Girls’ Lacrosse State Tournament, and seemingly peaking at the prime time — couldn’t have gone out against an opponent more worthy of witnessing THS’ progression.

Lake City construction company facing thousands of dollars in extra costs due to closure of U.S. 50
A Lake City-based construction company can't start its first job of the season due to the bridge closure on U.S. 50 between Montrose and Gunnison. Coal Creek Construction's heavy equipment is stuck in Montrose. It was set to start work for the U.S. Forest Service in Crested Butte at the beginning of this month. The company says it would cost thousands of dollars to move its equipment using the I-70 detour. 74-year-old Mike Schell heads the small, family-owned and operated business. He has nearly four decades of experience in construction and dirt work. He wants to see the Lake City Cutoff open to commercial vehicles (in excess of 16,000 GVWR) doing business locally.
Lacrosse team carries winning momentum to the next level
As of press time on Tuesday, Telluride coaches and players didn’t know who they’d first face in the postseason. But prospective opponents Windsor and Glenwood Springs — paired in the 2024 CHSAA Class 4A Boys’ Lacrosse State Tournament’s opening Round-of-24 — know what whichever side survives their duel on May 7, its reward will be a trip into the San Juan Mountains to face one of the stingiest squads in the mix.
