Great Falls Gets All Shook Up
The Great Falls area has been a little shaky lately. The word, “shaky,” does not imply that the community has gone haywire. Instead, the community has been the site of an earthquake and four aftershocks. A 4.2 magnitude earthquake—the largest and most noticeable—rumbled through on January 29, 2026, at 12:41 p.m. with an epicenter 4.9 to 7.5 miles northeast of the city near Blackhorse Lake. Later that evening a 2.7 magnitude aftershock struck northeast of Great Falls at 5.46 p.m. Since then and at this writing, three additional aftershocks have occurred on February 1, 13, and 26. Between 2.6 and 3.6 in magnitude, these aftershocks were located near the same area as the first noticeable earthquake a few miles north of Great Falls. All five of them were shallow at 5.7-12.6 miles deep.
