Corey Arwood started as a breaking news reporter for TCPalm/Treasure Coast Newspapers in June 2019. He mainly covers Indian River County, but also writes about events and topics that span the Treasure Coast. He's worked as a reporter at newspapers in North Florida and for a few years in Alabama after graduating from Auburn University.

Q: What is it like covering breaking news for TCPalm?

A: Storms, fires, crimes, major crashes, in general, anything with the potential to abruptly influence or affect the daily lives of Treasure Coast residents can fall within the scope of breaking news I report.

Sometimes I aim to provide information about an event, like a sudden electricity outage for neighborhoods and businesses caused by fallen power lines.

Or, my goal could be to get answers on the fate of the occupants of a migrant vessel, the remnants of which are found washed onto a beach. I provide answers and context by talking with local beachgoers and local and federal officials.

Whatever the scenario, it usually involves communicating with officials at local, state and federal agencies. It also often involves outlining tragic events ending in deaths, murders, or searches for missing persons and requires speaking with the people experiencing these tragedies at some of the worst moments in their lives.

Q: Why did you choose to be a breaking news journalist?

I enjoy documenting events as they arise and develop. I can follow up after the last investigative action was taken and the case closed, to provide an in-depth and comprehensive look at why something happened, how it could be prevented and what, if anything, was done to prevent it from happening again.
