The Lake Tahoe area is losing another longtime grocery store.
Save Mart is closing its Tahoe City location on 100 River Road — its only store in the Lake Tahoe area — after failing to come to an agreement with its landlord. The Tahoe City Save Mart will close its doors on Oct. 18 after more than 50 years of operation.
Save Mart confirmed on Monday that it has exhausted all options to keep the location open, including trying to acquire the property from owner Bechdolt Company, LLC .
“This decision by the landlord to not renew our lease came as a shock and we are deeply disappointed,” a Save Mart spokesperson told the Reno Gazette Journal.
“The landlord has been unresponsive to our proposals including lease renewal and purchase.”

Raley’s also closed its store in South Lake Tahoe after it failed to come to an agreement with its landlord. The longtime Lake Tahoe fixture, which had been open for 60 years, had its closure further hastened after the store’s roof collapsed .
Raley’s, however, also has other Lake Tahoe locations at Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Boulevard in Incline Village.
What’s next for Save Mart in Lake Tahoe?
Save Mart will offer employees at the Tahoe City location opportunities to work at its other grocery store locations in the region.
The closest Save Mart to the Tahoe location would be the Truckee, California, store on Deerfield Drive. Save Mart also has three stores in Reno, two stores in Carson City and one store in Sparks.
In addition to Save Mart, subsidiary FoodMaxx has one store in Sparks and another one in Carson City.
Despite the closure, Save Mart is still hoping to make a return to Lake Tahoe.
“We are actively exploring other locations so that we can continue to serve the Tahoe City community,” the company said.
