Stissing Mountain Mock Trial Program Fosters Interpersonal Communication Skills
The mock trial program at Stissing Mountain High School in Pine Plains, NY has been in existence since 2004, when John Schoonmaker started teaching in the district. Schoonmaker, who teaches AP European History, Government, and Economics, and Ryan Orton, who teaches seventh grade history, serve as the co-advisors for mock trial. Also involved in mock trial is Sarah Jones, a former trial attorney. Sarah serves as the attorney coach and works with the students regarding the law.

Great Barrington — The five-month-long saga over the Police Department’s warrantless investigation of a teacher over a copy of “Gender Queer” will now play out in a courtroom. Arantzazú Zuzene Galdós-Shapiro, the teacher investigated in the “Gender Queer” police investigation at W.E.B. Du Bois Regional Middle School, filed a civil rights lawsuit in the United States District Court on Tuesday, May 14.

Sandisfield voters will decide on $4 million operating budget year at town meeting
Voters in the community of around 1,000 are faced with a $4 million operating budget for fiscal year 2025, up over $230,000 or 6%, from the year prior. $1.6 million of the budget is for Sandisfield’s share of the Farmington River Regional School District, up over $83,000 or 5% from the year before. The line item for vocational-technical students is more than doubling from around $29,000 in FY24 to $80,000 in this year’s budget. Residents will also be asked to decide on whether to add a new commercial tent camping bylaw to existing zoning ordinances in an effort to regulate tent camping and glamping on private properties.
