The annual meeting of the Archery Division of the Lassen Game Conservation League was held at Susanville Fair grounds in Susanville last Sunday. A large crowd of archers assembled, and twenty men and ten women entered the contests. There were members of archery clubs from Lakeview, Oregon; Reno, Nevada, besides those from Alturas, Redding, Red Bluff and Susanville.

Based upon its own initiative, the 2023-2024 Lassen County Grand Jury formed a special committee and investigated the Lassen County Auditor-Controller’s Office. According to the grand jury report, “The major function of a Civil Grand Jury is to oversee all aspects of the legislative and administrative departments that make up county, city, and special district governments. It has the power to examine and guarantee that those who are given the responsibility of managing these offices are: truthful, dedicated, and sincere in their efforts to serve the public. There are 42 states that have some form of Grand Jury, but California and Nevada mandate the impaneling of a Grand Jury each year.”

The Lassen Board of Supervisors will again focus on the fair budget this week, addressing the significant deficit in the Fair Fund through three agenda items. During the September budget hearings, controversy arose over the need to supplement the Fair Fund with general fund money—a standard practice but now under scrutiny. The board criticized former fair manager Kaitlyn Midgley for last-minute approvals related to the Hidden Woods Festival, an event designed to diversify the fairgrounds’ offerings and create a new revenue stream to reduce reliance on general fund contributions. While Midgley acknowledged the festival would lose money in its first year, she warned the board that without similar events, the fairgrounds would continue to depend on general fund support. The board had agreed to the anticipated loss.
