South Central struck first but could not sustain their early run, falling to St. Anthony, 10-3, in the Championship game of the National Trail Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Cougars looked like they had something to prove against the defending champions early as Brody Markley singled on the first pitch of the game and Callaway Smith followed suit with a first pitch single of this own to put runners on. Colton Smith drew a walk to load the bases and then Trevan Sidwell would work the count and draw the bases loaded walk to score the first Cougar run of the game. With bases still loaded, Hudson Moore grounded into a double play that allowed the runner to score from third and South Central went up 2-0. That first inning lead would hold until the bottom of the third when the Bulldogs took advantage of a South Central throwing error as two runs would come in and tie the game up at 2-2. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, St. Anthony hit back to back singles to start the bottom of the fifth inning and again took advantage of a South Central throwing error to put two runs on the board, taking their first lead of the game 4-2. After another Cougar throwing error and a hit by pitch a line drive single brought in two more Bulldogs as St. Anthony pushed their lead to 6-2. The Bulldogs continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth as a hit by pitch and a single would put two runners on. The Cougars would choose to intentionally walk the Bulldogs clean-up hitter and St. Anthony would make them pay with a fly ball single to right field that would score two. A fly ball out that allowed the runner in from third after tagging up would find the Cougars down 9-2 and a wild pitch brought in one final Bulldog run as they lead South Central 10-2. The Cougars would try to battle in the top of the seventh as Evan Hoover hit a long fly ball single to centerfield followed by back to back walks from Maddox Robb and Zane Montes to load the bases. Luke Shumate then grounded into a fielder’s choice as Hoover came in to score and cut the St. Anthony lead to 10-3. However, South Central would hit into a double play to end the game. South Central ends the fall season at 15-6.

Charleston Trojan’s homecoming game was wrecked by the Mount Zion Brave’s 42-10 victory at Trojan Hill on Friday night. A score that would not be expected at halftime with Charleston leading 10-7 at that time. And completely dominating the second half with 89 yards to Mount Zion’s eight.

The Taylorville Tornadoes defeated the Mattoon Green Wave 21-7 in an Apollo Conference showdown. The Tornadoes used a balanced run and pass game to pick up the win. The Altamont Indians were held to just a pair of hits in a 8-1 loss to Windsor/Stew-Stras in the Third Place game of the National Trail Conference Baseball Tournament at Beecher City High School on Saturday. The Hatchets took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and tacked on another run in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 lead. As Altamont continued to be held hitless by WSS starting pitcher Jackson Gurgel, the Hatchets would open their lead up further with a four-run top of the 6th inning as the Indians trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Altamont would break up Gurgel’s no-hitter in the inning as Cooper McManaway singled to shortstop with one out. After a fly out to center, Kade Milleville walked as the Indians threatened with two runners aboard but a strike out would end the inning. The Hatchets drew a leadoff walk before back to back singles resulted in another run and the Indians found themselves trailing 8-0 coming to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Keegan Schultz drove the second pitch he saw over the center field fence to put Altamont on the scoreboard and cut into the WSS lead, 8-1, but a ground out and a strike out ended the inning and the game as Altamont fell 8-1 to end their season. The Indians wrap up the fall going 11-13 with a 4th place finish in the NTC Tournament.

FISHER – The Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley soccer team won 2-0 over Teutopolis in its regular season finale on Friday. Daniel Santos-Castaneda scored the go-ahead goal for Fisher/GCMS (17-3-1) via an assist from Spencer Kleist in the 49th minute. David Hull scored an insurance goal via a Sid Pfoff assist in the 68th minute.

Linebacker Jared Pedraza anchored the Redhawks' defense against Eastern Illinois University, racking up 9 tackles while covering the field from sideline to sideline. Pedraza, a graduate transfer from Northwestern State University, is currently the Redhawks' fourth-leading tackler. Surprisingly, he started as SEMO’s backup linebacker, however, Pedraza dedicated himself to improving his game during the offseason, and has continued his improvement throughout the season.

Arcola hasn't had much luck against Okaw Valley recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday.
