Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Christopher Edwin Goldsmith, 58, of Fayette, on a valid Fayette County warrant for failure to appear for debtors exam. Goldsmith was transported to the Fayette County Jail to await an initial appearance with a magistrate. Goldsmith is being held on a $500 cash only bond.

A rural Oelwein man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to cut a woman’s head off with a sword, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a home on 50th Street on a report of a disturbance. While they were on the phone with a witness, 57 year old Mitchell Langel was heard in the background yelling, “I’ll cut your head off.” He was charged with Harassment and is being held on a $2,000 bond. Langel was arrested in 1998 after shooting a Cedar Rapids police officer in the face with a shotgun during a standoff. He was sent to prison for Attempted Murder in that incident. He has been arrested twice within the last five years for threatening women. In 2019 he brandished a kitchen knife and threatened to skin a woman in Waterloo. That incident led to a standoff with Waterloo Police. Then in 2022, he sent a text to an Oelwein woman threatening to skin her alive and burn down her house. He was sentenced to probation in that case.

Cedar Falls Police received a call of a shooting early Wednesday morning in the vicinity of Wedgewood Drive, around 12:45AM. According to a release, an investigation determined it was a swatting call. A “swatting” is defined as an illegal prank when someone calls in a fake report to emergency services, accusing another person of a serious crime. A similar shooting call occurred in Waterloo around 1:30 at an address on Sarah Drive. That too was quickly determined as a prank call, by Waterloo Police. The two calls appear to be related but no other information is available.

A Mississippi man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a woman in Waterloo on Monday morning. 43-year-old Ladrick Benford has been charged with willful injury causing serious injury following a disturbance at a Waterloo residence around 3:30 a.m. on Monday. Waterloo Police were dispatched to the 1200 block of Downing Court for an assault in progress. Officers found an injured woman with multiple stab wounds. Officers learned that Benford, the victim’s boyfriend, assaulted the victim when she was asleep, stabbing her multiple times. The victim’s sister called police. Benford is being held at the Black Hawk County Jail on $50,000 bond.

The camping season is winding down across North Iowa. Chickasaw County Conservation Director Chad Humpal told the Board of Supervisors this week that camping at Split Rock Park near Fredericksburg will close next Monday (10.14) while Airport Lake Park, northwest of New Hampton, will remain open as long as weather allows, allowing the County to generate more revenue.

More than 30 bikers and residents recently came together to cut the ribbon on the completed paving of the final stretch of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail. It comes on the 40-year anniversary of the founding of the more than 52-mile trail between Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Cedar Rapids. Linn County Treasurer Brent Oleson has been using the trail since its inception and said the paving was possible in part due to a change in the way Iowans think about recreation. “I think through RAGBRAI and biking it has become more and popular,” he says. “When I was growing up, you never would’ve advertised your home, when you listed your home to sell, you probably would have put what school you were were close to maybe. Now if you check, they’ll tell you what trail you’re close to,” Oleson says.

The MFL MarMac cross country team competed against a large field that included some Class 3A and bigger 2A schools in an Oct. 1 meet at Jesup. The Bulldog girls finished in the middle of the pack, eighth out of 17 teams who recorded scores. Cora Keehner was the top finisher, turning in a 21:17 for 28th place.
