I recently stumbled across this beautifully written Legend of Mount Konocti. "Many summers ago, two giants, one named Kah-Bel, lived on Bartlett Mountain, the other named Konocti lived on mountain bearing his name. Konocti had a beautiful daughter named Lupiyoma. Kah-Bel, wishing for the hand of Lupiyoma, caused a fight with her father, resulting in the death of both. Grief stricken, Lupiyoma shed tears over the body of her lover, Kah-Bel, causing Little Borax Lake. Her father, lying down where Konocti now stands, died, and his daughter's tears caused the bubbling water in the springs in what is now known as Soda Bay."

The 417-acre Glenhaven Fire in Lake County is still 90-percnt contained.* Authorities lifted all remaining evacuation warnings for Glenhaven and Clearlake Oaks on Tuesday. The fire has been burning since last Friday and has destroyed two homes and damaged another. At its peak, the fire put about three-thousand residents under evacuation orders. Cal Fire crews will likely remain in the area until the weekend.

This week my youngest and I packed up and took our RV to our favorite campsite on the Russian River just because we could! She commutes for school and I can work from anywhere. How lucky we are. Yesterday, while enjoying a soak in the outdoor hot tub, I noticed what appeared to be a leaf or a stick floating in the water. Upon a closer look, I realized it was alive–a praying mantis. With a quick dip of my hands and a rather large splash, this little creature landed in a puddle of water on the concrete, while we watched on in hopes that we had saved a life. Our little friend dragged its drenched self to dry concrete, flipped upright, and began cleaning. Finally, it flared its wings and shook all over. This process repeated over and over while our toes and fingers started to prune up. Our friend made several flight attempts as we eagerly watched until we finally had to give up for the showers. Upon leaving, my daughter checked to see if the mantis had made its flight to freedom. Indeed it had. I don’t think I have ever smiled a brighter smile before. Oh, the big and little things in life!

Last week I told you about the Board of Supervisors learning from a CEO staffer that one of the recipients of the CDBG low-interest loan program has defaulted on their loan. That would be Geiger’s Market of Hopland, which closed their doors this past July. The Hopland store is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) created by former Laytonville Geiger’s grocery store owner, Michael Braught, shortly before he put the Laytonville Geiger’s Long Valley Market up for sale in 2023. The amount of the loan was $180k, at one percent interest for 10 years, which was used for inventory and working capital. The loan required that 6 full-time equivalent jobs be created by July 1, 2024.

On Thursday, Upper Lake faced Clear Lake in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Upper Lake Cougars had just enough and edged the Clear Lake Cardinals out 3-2. It’s exciting to know of yet another outdoor destination in Lake County! Emerald green hues paint the wetlands at the Lake County Land Trust’s Kuulanapo Wetland Preserve even in the heat of summer, along with swaying golden grasses. The Kuulanapo Preserve, located at 446 Soda Bay Road in Lakeport is open by appointment, and there have been some guided walks listed on the Lake County Land Trust’s website as well. You’ll need to call or email the Land Trust (see below) to check for dates of guided walks. This incredible acquisition of over 280 acres is comprised of not only wetlands, but oak woodland and riparian landscape. The Lake County Land Trust (LCLT) has worked incredibly hard to add this land, part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Big Valley Conceptual Area Protection Plan as top priority property, since its importance lies in its ability to add to the health of Clear Lake.

The Lake County Theatre Company (LCTC) has announced its 2024-2025 season and first up is a comedy by Neil Simon. What is unique about California Suite is that it’s four mini-plays in one. Each scene takes place in the same hotel suite and features a different couple. We get a glimpse into the relationships of these married (or formerly married) couples in the middle of extenuating situations and heightened emotions. There is tension, denial, hope, panic, fear, anger, and pain both emotional and physical. Yet, in each scene, there is empathy and humor to be found. It is, after all, a comedy. This production, in particular, is also unique in that there is one director, Tim Barnes, and 4 assistant directors. One for each scene. But more about that, later.
