The Montpelier Walgreens store and pharmacy will be closing for good on Nov. 6, employees were told on Sept. 27, leaving Kinney Drugs as the only pharmacy operating in the city’s downtown. The closure, which comes seven years after Walgreens purchased 31 Rite Aid stores in Vermont, including the Montpelier location, appears to be part of the struggling company’s plans to shut down 25% of its stores nationwide in the next few years. While the Barre Walgreens looks like it will remain in operation for now, the Hardwick Walgreens was closed Sept. 30, the downtown Burlington Walgreens closed in November 2023, and the Morrisville branch closed in March 2023. One of the Montpelier Walgreens building’s owners, Kent Bigglestone, told The Bridge that the closure announcement came as a surprise to him.

After the railroad came to Montpelier in 1849 (see The Bridge, September 4–16, 2024), it eventually expanded easterly with two different lines, one to rail lines along the Connecticut River and the other to Barre and its granite quarries. To make this expansion possible, in 1872 abutments on either side of the North Branch near its confluence with the Winooski were constructed to accommodate a covered bridge across the smaller river. A steel truss bridge was added next to it in 1905. The first covered bridge was swept away in the 1927 flood, but the 1905 steel truss bridge still stands and is being rehabilitated this summer.
