Revisiting Mike Vicars' previous high school football turnarounds
DELTA, Ohio — To get the full picture of Mike Vicars' coaching journey, it is important to include the humble beginnings and how he first had to navigate his own personal coaching turnaround. A 1981 graduate of Liberty Center, Vicars played defensive end and fullback for coach Jim Meeker's 1980 Tigers team that started 9-0 before losing an NWOAL title showdown to Archbold and then dropping the program's first playoff game. After starting classes in 1981 at Bowling Green State University, where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1987, Vicars dived into coaching as an assistant under Meeker at LC for three years (1981-83). He then spent three seasons at Delta (1984-86) before landing his first head coaching post in 1987 at Holgate, where his teams went 0-10 and 1-9. From there, it didn't get much better when he became head coach at Ada (21-40 record, 1989-94), as his first three Bulldogs teams went 1-9, 0-10, and 3-7.
