My name is Robert McMillen, I have been a deputy sheriff in Ida County for 15 years. I have been teaching D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) for nine years. I met sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep through D.A.R.E. and the yearly D.A.R.E. conferences. Stewart has taught D.A.R.E. for 28 years and takes pride in the program. Stewart believes in the D.A.R.E. program as do many members of the community. Stewart has seen many of his students go on to great things and has taught D.A.R.E. to some of his students’ children.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 9, 2024, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will temporarily close eastbound and westbound lanes on Interstate 90 and divert traffic through the on and off-ramps at Brandon (exit 406). This traffic diversion will be maintained through the overnight until 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024. This traffic pattern switch is scheduled to remove forms from the exit bridge.

Des Moines, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority on Wednesday announced 190 thousand dollars in grants have been awarded to ten rural Iowa communities, including one in our area. The grant awards are provided through three Empower Rural Iowa Grant programs, and will support rural initiatives including housing, childcare, and business/economic growth.

Nobles County Historical Society is hosting a new exhibit, “Wallace Dow: Prairie Architect,” through November. Wallace Dow was considered the premier architect of the region in the late 19th century. He came to Dakota Territory in 1880 and built a number of iconic structures, including the Historic Dayton House in Worthington. The exhibit, which is a traveling version of an original exhibit from Siouxland Heritage Museums in Sioux Falls, was planned to coincide with the 20th anniversary celebration of the restoration of the Dayton House.

Worthington’s Fanuel Wolday was once again a winner Thursday as he took first place at the I-90 Invitational cross country meet in Fairmont. Wolday crossed the finish line in a time of 16:30.4 seconds for the Trojans, who placed third as a team in the meet with 78 points. St. Peter won the boys meet with 47 points, with Madelia next at 55. Among other area teams competing in the eight-team meet were Heron Lake-Okabena, which was sixth, and Jackson County Central, which was eighth.

Northwest Iowa — While we started the summer with flooding, we’ve had so little rain recently that fire officials are now concerned about wildfires. Sioux County is the latest to join the burning ban club. On Monday, Lyon and Osceola county officials announced a burning ban in their counties. Of the four northwest Iowa counties, only O’Brien County does not yet have a burning ban.
