Man who claimed to be the 'son of God' sentenced for killing neighbor because he was a 'demon'
JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (TCN) -- A 42-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for "brutally" stabbing and killing his 68-year-old neighbor in 2021. The Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office announced that on Oct. 9, a judge sentenced Jerry Gelpi to life in prison plus 40 years after a jury found him guilty of the first-degree murder of Charles Davis. Gelpi was also convicted of obstruction of justice for destroying evidence and will have to pay a $100,000 fine.
Popular Bargain Store to Close All 9 Louisiana Locations After Filing For Bankruptcy
Mississippi-based discount retailer Dirt Cheap has filed for bankruptcy protection and announced plans to close all of its locations in Louisiana. According to The Advocate, court filings in a Delaware bankruptcy court reveal that the company will close 68 stores in total. Dirt Cheap operates nine stores throughout Louisiana, including locations in Lafayette, Slidell, Hammond, Amite, Bogalusa, Houma, Bossier City, Monroe, and Franklinton. A tenth location in Zachary recently closed ahead of the bankruptcy filing.
NOPD: Man calling himself 'Larry Bird' tricks sellers, then carjacks them by force
NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department released the image of a man they believe is a suspect in two carjackings in New Orleans East on Oct. 3 and Oct. 7. According to police, the man identified in the image allegedly referred to himself as "Larry Bird" and pretended to be interested in buying the victims' vehicles before taking the vehicles by force.
Accident on Highrise Bridge closed I-10 West
NEW ORLEANS — The I-10 westbound was closed for at least an hour at Almonaster due to an accident on the Highrise Bridge. I-10 West closed and the DOTD advises motorists to use an alternate route such as the Danziger Bridge which caused traffic congestion as far back to Chef Menteur Highway. This came during the early morning commute hours.
