A traffic stop last Friday led to several drug-related arrest by the Mitchell Police Department. On Friday at approximately 9:15 am a Mitchell Police Officer conducted a traffic stop in the Freedom Value Center parking lot. The vehicle was being driven by 42-year-old male Mark Leach, who was identified as being an employee of the Freedom Value Center. Leach is on active Probation in South Dakota for a prior drug related conviction. During the traffic stop a search of Leach’s vehicle was conducted which led to Officers locating methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Madison, South Dakota man is arrested Sunday night by Pierre police after leading law enforcement on a slow speed pursuit through Pierre. Pierre Police Captain Dusty Pelle says officers were dispatched around 6:45 pm to a traffic complaint of a possibly impaired driver who was swerving and tailgating other drivers near the intersection of Pierre Street and Sioux Avenue. Officers tried to stop the vehicle near Capitol and Ash Avenues but the driver, identified by police as 33 year-old Justin Olson of Madison did not stop. Multiple law enforcement units were following Olson with lights and sirens on. Olson finally stopped near Oneida Avenue and Pleasant Drive. Olson was found by officers to have been drinking alcohol. He was arrested and taken to the Hughes County Jail on charges including Second Offense D-U-I, Driving with a Suspended License, Eluding, Failure to Maintain Insurance, No Seat belt, Open Container, Stop Sign Violation and Unsafe Lane Change.

Next year will mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of the man who is likely Madison’s most famous person: the late Sen. Karl E. Mundt. Mundt was born in Humboldt but moved to Madison as a child and graduated from Madison High School in 1919. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Carlton College in Minnesota, Mundt was hired to teach at Bryant High School in South Dakota and was promoted to superintendent just a year later. In 1928, he and his wife Mary moved to Madison where he taught speech, psychology and economics at Eastern State Normal School (now Dakota State University).

The Baltic Bulldog volleyball team ran their winning streak to seven with a straight set win at home over the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Monday, October 7th. In each of the three sets, Baltic pulled away about the midway point. The Cougars led 3-2 to start the first set. Baltic took a 5-4 lead and then the score was tied 7-7. With construction season begins to come to an end in South Dakota, a number of street projects in the city of Madison are winding down as well. Segments 1, 2, and 3 of Madison’s Infrastructure Improvements are nearing completion. Those segments include projects on 9th street, North Union, Roosevelt Ave., NE 8th Street, and Maplewood Drive. Walkthroughs have been completed on all three segments. Segment 5A, which includes S. Union and 4th street, should begin paving next week.
