Syracuse, N.Y. -- Add Dwight Buycks to the Boeheim’s Army roster.
You might remember the name.
Buycks, a 6-foot-3 guard, played at Marquette from 2009-11, and was a key member of the Golden Eagles alumni team in The Basketball Tournament. The Golden Eagles won the $1 million winner-take-all prize money in TBT’s 2020 bubble, but disbanded after last summer.
Boeheim’s Army general manager Shaun Belbey said he considered Buycks a potential Boeheim’s Army member as soon as he learned the Marquette alumni would not longer have a team. The two connected on Instagram about a week ago, Belbey said, and “made it official,” soon after that internet conversation.
Belbey said Buycks, 34, is one of the better scorers in TBT history.
“Obviously he can score with the best of them,” Belbey said, “but we’re also looking forward to him bringing his experience and his leadership.”
Buycks played on a stacked 2011 Marquette team (Jimmy Butler, Jae Crowder, Darius Johnson-Odom) that beat Syracuse in January in Milwaukee, then eliminated the Orange from the NCAA Tournament in Cleveland later that year.
Buycks is the fourth player Boeheim’s Army has announced for summer games that will be played at The Upstate Medical Center at the Oncenter War Memorial. He joins a Boeheim’s Army team that includes former SU players Chris McCullough and Tyus Battle, plus Deandre Kane, who has played for the Army the last two summers.
Boeheim’s Army will announce more roster additions this week; TBT requires that teams have nine players by June 10 to qualify for its event. Tickets are on sale for the Syracuse regional, scheduled for July 24-28.
