Berwick, Pa. — A man is facing charges after he hid a woman in his apartment who was running from police, according to charges. Officer Joshua Lowery was on patrol on March 21 at 3:30 p.m. when he spotted Ashley Lopez walking on the sidewalk on Orange Street in Berwick. Girardville Suspends Police Department
GIRARDVILLE BOROUGH, SCHUYLKILL CO. (WOLF) — To save taxpayers money, the Girardville Borough Government toyed with suspending their police department. “We need to either increase taxes in the upcoming year or do we make the hard decision and say enough is enough, we give it our best shot, we can only increase taxes so much to fix a problem,” says Mayor Michael Zangari.
Bloomsburg animal advocate wins Duck Defender Award for her advocacy for geese
Bloomsburg, Columbia Co. — A Bloomsburg animal activist, Dawn Moore, received the Duck Defender Award from Duck Defenders, an international program of the animal welfare charity Humane Long Island. The award was given to Moore for her dedication to protecting the Geese population despite receiving a dementia diagnosis recently.
New notification system for nuclear plant in Luzerne County
The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced plans for a new notification system for the nuclear power plant in Luzerne County. Previously, the main alert from the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station would send alerts through sirens and a broadcast message on air. The new system will send an alert to any phones in a 50-mile radius and other methods including on-air. FEMA officials hope to have the system approved and implemented by October.
