Mount Airy Shooting Investigation Still Underway
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Around 10:00 p.m. Sunday, Surry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting call on Welcome Baptist Church Road in Mount Airy. When deputies and Mount Airy Police Department officers arrived to the scene, they found Roger Dollyhite with an apparent gunshot wound. Dollyhite, 80, was taken by Surry County Emergency Medical Services to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

2023 is the Year of the Trail in North Carolina. Each month, The Laurel will celebrate with a story about an inspiring trail, related organization or project. The town of Elkin in Surry County is a top regional destination for hiking, biking and other trail activities. Three trails converge in Elkin’s downtown: the North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail, Overmountain Victory Trail and the Yadkin River Blue Water Trail. Stolen identity leads to jailbreak, felony charge for Elkin man
Late last week at the Surry County Detention Center an inmate escaped custody of jailers by posing as another inmate. He was brought back into custody within two hours and little fanfare was made of the event, so little that some residents still are unaware it even happened or why they were not alerted.

North Carolina man facing numerous child sex charges
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A Mount Airy Man is facing more than 70 charges related to sex with a minor. The Surry County Sheriff’s Office said Jonah Isaac Brannock, 39, was arrested following a month-long investigation. He’s charged with multiple counts of indecent liberties with a minor, first-degree statutory sexual offense, and statutory rape among other charges.
