Valley Program for Aging Services celebrates 50 years of service
WAYNESBORO — Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS), the local area agency on aging, is celebrating 50 years of service in communities throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Established in 1974, VPAS is part of a nationwide network of area agencies on aging formed in the years following the passage of the federal Older Americans Act to support healthy aging in place, the agency said in a press release announcing the 50 year anniversary.

Waynesboro: Long-delayed West End fire station finally put out for bid by city
It may have taken 16 years, but a voter-approved project to build a fire department substation in the West End of Waynesboro seems to finally be gaining some momentum. Waynesboro City Manager Mike Hamp told AFP today that the project was posted to eVa and the city’s website yesterday and is officially out for bid. AFP had reached out to Hamp for an update on April 30.
CAVA facility in Verona begins producing Mediterranean-inspired foods
VERONA — The new CAVA facility in Verona was buzzing with activity Wednesday afternoon. Familiar Augusta County faces, local and state representatives, and some of CAVA’s business neighbors in Verona filled a reception area. CAVA produces Mediterranean-inspired foods, such as Crazy Feta, pita wraps, pita chips, hummus, tzatziki, and salads. Waynesboro's traffic garden will help new bicyclists learn to ride safely
WAYNESBORO — Waynesboro will soon be getting a space for new riders to safely learn how to negotiate bicycles along a network of streets, free of cars. The Rotary Traffic Playground, which is scheduled to open this fall next to Constitution Park on a portion of the old DuPont parking lot, is what is known as a traffic garden. It's a set of small-sized streets with scaled-down traffic features where children and other new riders can practice on bikes. The one in Waynesboro will include stop and yield signs, as well as pedestrian crosswalks, just like real city streets. It will serve as a controlled environment where kids can gain confidence and master skills.

Augusta County tax deadline extended
VERONA – The Augusta County Board of Supervisors extended this year’s tax deadline from June 5 to June 21. The change comes due to the reassessment process. According to Deputy County Administrator Jennifer Whetzel, a delay in procurement led the tax bills being mailed later than usual. The mailing delay pushed the staff to request the deadline delay from the supervisors.
Fishburne Military School Class of 2024 graduate appointed to U.S. Naval Academy
Fishburne Military School’s (FMS) salutatorian, Cadet Michael Manley, Class of 2024, has received an appointment with the United States Naval Academy. The application process is highly competitive and only 7 percent of applicants receive an appointment. All students of the Naval Academy attend on a full scholarship in return for five years of active-duty service upon graduation.
