'It’s something that I’ve aspired to do': New Martin County Schools superintendent discusses plan
In a unanimous vote, board members of the Martin County School District named Michael Maine, deputy superintendent, as its newest superintendent during a meeting on Tuesday.

“It’s something that I’ve aspired to do,” said Michael Maine, deputy superintendent of Martin County School District.
It comes after current superintendent John Millay, who has filled the role since 2020, announced he would be leaving. Millay’s last day is set for June 30.

“I believed in the work that we were doing and that we have set out to accomplish in the district, and I want that to continue,” added Maine.
Maine started working with the Martin County School District as the executive director of principals and professional standards back in 2021.
“I already know the community, and I’ve met key people within the district; I have great relationships with the board members already, and those stakeholders that are going to be key people to help us move things forward,” said Maine.
Maine’s four-year contract is under negotiations with a proposed salary of up to $254,000 a year.
All of those details will be finalized during the next school board meeting on April 18.
Maine says the first 90-day plan is going to be rolling out soon and explains once his contract goes into effect, district leaders will meet to discuss the overall mission and have to agree on what the priorities will be.

“An internal candidate like myself has the opportunity to hit the ground running and really speeding up the process and make some of the needed changes,” Maine added.
Maine will begin serving as superintendent for the Martin County School District by no later than July 1, but is expected to start taking on responsibilities sooner than that.
