'Beautiful memories': End of era as Stoughton Jewish deli closes its doors after 30 years

STOUGHTON — It's the end of an era as Maxie's Delicatessen in Stoughton closes permanently after more than three decades in business. The restaurant closed its doors but will forever be in the community's hearts.

Hanging outside taped to the door is a handwritten letter from the owners thanking the community for the "beautiful years" and "support," while letting customers know they will be permanently closed. The note did not indicate why the business is closing and owners were unreachable for comment.

"We loved every one of you! Thank you for the support and all the beautiful memories," owner Steve Robbins and his business partner and cook Joyce Ann Silva wrote in a handwritten note taped to the door.

For over 30 years, Maxie's Delicatessen has been a culinary haven, offering our community a unique taste of comfort food. From homemade knishes to matzo balls and Romanian pastrami, each dish was a testament to the deli's commitment to preserving traditional Jewish flavors.

"We've been in a business as a Jewish deli for years, and we wanted a place where people could have specialized meats, traditional corned beef hash, and Romanian pastrami," Robbins said in 2022.

The deli owner's most immense joy was making food from scratch and serving customers over the counter with a smile.

When the restaurant was open for business, they had a large selection of menu items, from breakfast and lunch to a small mid-day pick-me-up to hold you over until dinner.

Delicious entrées included smoked herring, bagels with lox, fresh stuffed cabbage, corned beef, eggs with pastrami and classic American pancakes and omelets made to order.

For decades, Robbins and Silva poured their hearts and souls into growing Maxie's Delicatessen. Their dedication and hard work are a testament to their love for the community. It's truly a loss to see them go.

Since 1993, Maxie's Deli shared their family recipes and food that was "one of a kind."
