An investigation has been launched after human remains were discovered at the Dry Pond Cemetery in Stoughton on Wednesday.

Officials said that workers were digging a fresh grave at the cemetery when they stumbled upon what they believed to be a set of human remains that were not contained in a coffin.

The workers contacted Stoughton police and the State Police Detective Unit was alerted.

Authorities excavated the remains on Friday and transported them to the Chief Medical Examiner in Boston.

Little is known so far about the case, which the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office called "unusual and concerning".

"The origin of the remains, the identity of the person, the cause and manner of that person’s death, as well as how the remains became interred at Dry Pond Cemetery are all unknown and under active investigation," the office said in a statement.

Information will be released as appropriate, officials said.
