Students, fans rally in support of UConn women’s basketball team at sendoff event
STORRS, CT (WFSB) - The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team was pumped full of all the support the Storrs campus could muster on Wednesday.
The Huskies head to Seattle for a date with the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.
A rally was held to help send the team off. Watch it live below:
“At the sendoff, I assume this whole street’s going to be packed,” said Eben Hikade, UConn sophomore. “Everyone’s going to love it here.”
“We’re hoping for a championship,” said Laura Lydem of Bristol. “We want to bring home the ‘natty’ of course. That’s the ultimate goal always.”
“Oh it’s so fun. I just love seeing everyone out in their UConn gear and stuff”, said Allison Mendrala, UConn freshman.
With Jonathan the husky by their side, the players signed a few autographs and addressed the crowd before heading off.
The atmosphere was incredible and the players showed much appreciation for their fans.
UConn defeated Baylor on Monday, 77-58. Azzi Fudd put in 22 points to lead the Huskies.
Meanwhile, Ohio State defeated North Carolina 71-69 behind Taylor Mikesell’s 17 points.
UConn and Ohio state will meet at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The game will air on ABC.
The Huskies 6-0 all time against the Buckeyes.
