A Storm Lake man is in custody following an investigation into reported domestic abuse. Yesterday (Monday) at approximately 10:45 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was called to Super 8 Motel for a welfare check on a female. When officers arrived, a female victim alleged that 37-year-old Johnathan Belcher of Storm Lake assaulted her earlier in the evening during an argument at a residence in the 400 Block of West 6th Street. The victim alleges Belcher pushed her to the ground, lit her hair on fire with a lighter, and then damaged several windows in the residence. She escaped the property and fled to the Super 8, where staff contacted authorities. In the incident, she sustained minor injuries to her upper body and hair, which did not require medical treatment. Belcher was located by Storm Lake Police shortly after the call and was taken into custody without incident. As a result of the incident, Belcher was charged with third-offense domestic abuse assault, a class D felony, reckless use of fire, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both serious misdemeanors. Authorities say Belcher also has two prior convictions for domestic assault from 2019 in Alabama. He was booked into the Buena Vista County jail, where he was held on a $7,000 bond.
