    Refloating efforts of the Aurora underway in the California Delta

    (FOX40.COM) — Efforts are underway to attempt to refloat the Aurora, a nearly 300 foot cruise ship that sunk in the California Delta near Stockton in May , according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

    A unified command has formed with the Office of Spill Prevention and Recovery to continue installing dewatering pumps on the ship.

    The refloat work that began over the weekend will continue throughout the week along with ongoing efforts to remove any remaining fuel, according to CDFW.

    Aurora began sinking on May 22 while it was docked in Little Potato Slough along the San Joaquin River.

    Efforts began immediately to contain and remove and contaminants that may have entered the waterway from the sinking vessel.

    The Aurora was built in 1955 and was first christened the Wappen Von Hamburg and would be West Germany’s first large-scale ship building project following WWII.
