Montezuma firefighters work to free a bicyclist who was pinned under a semi-tractor rig during an accident on Mariposa Road and Stagecoach Road in Stockton on Tuesday, Mar. 28, 2023.

A bicyclist died Tuesday afternoon following a collision with a semitruck just east of Highway 99 in south Stockton.

At about 3:40 p.m. first responders were called to the intersection of Mariposa and Stagecoach roads following reports that a bicyclist had been pinned under a semitruck.

At least three Montezuma Fire District personnel could be seen lying partially under the truck's cab attempting to extricate the bicyclist.

The truck was pulled over in the eastbound lane of Mariposa just west of Stagecoach. No trailer was attached. A bike wheel was visible beneath the front fender.

A crane truck lifted the front-left corner of the cab a few minutes later, and fire personnel were able to pull out the bicyclist, who appeared to be male and had obvious injuries.

A California Highway Patrol officer said she couldn't share details about what caused the collision.

Chief Ed Montel of the Montezuma Fire District also did not share details but said rainy weather likely played a role.

A spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner could not immediately be reached to identify the bicyclist. County officials do not identify the dead publicly until their families are notified.
