Tuesday, May 30, Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., Deputy Chief Bryan Warner, and other Cherokee Nation officials will break ground on the Mary L. (Holland) Carson Wellness Center in Stilwell at 1 p.m.
In 2021, Chief Hoskin signed the Public Health and Wellness Fund Act, which allocated 7% of funds generated by Cherokee Nation Health Services through third-party revenue to be earmarked to provide substance abuse treatment centers and wellness centers. The Mary L. (Holland) Carson Wellness Center was the first major construction announcement under the Act in October of 2021.
The wellness center will be a two-story building with approximately 50,000 square feet.
The center will include outdoor amenities such as walking trails, gathering spaces, and areas for traditional games to be played.
The interior will consist of a fitness center, child watch, teaching kitchen, classroom, administration space, and a congregation café.
A fitness center will also be included, with amenities like a basketball court, a weight and cardio area, studios, and a running track.
