    Running: Kurschner, Monroe take top spots in St. Croix Crossing Half Marathon

    Bemidji runners Brett Kurschner and Isaac Schouten were the top finishers in the St. Croix Crossing Half Marathon that finished along the St. Croix River in Stillwater on Saturday, July 27.

    More than 1,200 runners completed one of the three races, which covered 5-kilometers, 10-kilometers, or 13.1 miles and finished on Sam Bloomer Way, near the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge.

    Kurschner, 19, won the men’s half marathon with a winning time of 1:17:19, about two minutes ahead of Schouten (1:19:30). More than half the runners (634) in the field completed the half marathon, compared to 295 runners in the 10-kilometer race and 327 in the 5-kilometer event.

    Bloomington’s Kendall Monroe, 33, was the top female finisher in a time of 1:28:22 while Megan Cuta, 21, of Stillwater was the runner-up in a time of 1:35:28.

    In the 10-kilometer race, 34-year-old Peter Falcon of Maple Grove took top honors with a time of 34:46 while Derrick Oberle (35:25) followed in second place. Shannon Bolter, 31, of Minnetonka was the women’s winner after crossing the line in 42:41, which was 52 seconds ahead of runner-up Kelsie Ashleson (43:33) of Downing, Wis.

    Brock Bjerke, 18, of Hudson, Wis., was the top finisher in the 5-kilometer race with a winning time of 16:26, followed by Nic Aubert (16:44) of Woodbury and Eric Norton (16:59) of Stillwater.

    Ella Johnson, 19, of Prescott, Wis., won the female division in a time of 19:51, outlasting Erica Matykiewicz (20:48) of Scandia and Peyton Quaas (20:54) of Northfield.

    This was the third of five races being conducted by Run Stillwater in the St. Croix Valley this season. The series began with the Stillwater Half Marathon on May 25 and continued with the Stillwater Lift Bridge Road Races on June 29 and the St. Croix Crossing Half Marathon on July 27. Upcoming races include the Gopher to Badger Half Marathon on Aug. 10 and the Stillwater Log Run Half Marathon on Sept. 21.
