ST. PAUL — Just four shots separated Stillwater’s top five finishers as the Ponies secured a fifth-place finish in a Suburban East Conference girls golf match on Monday, April 22 at Highland National Golf Club.

Reigning conference champion East Ridge won its second SEC match of the young season with a score of 156, which was nine shots ahead of runner-up Mounds View (165). White Bear Lake (173) and Cretin-Derham Hall (177) followed in third and fourth with the Ponies next in fifth at 181.

Sam Schinka paced a balanced Stillwater lineup with a 43 while Kylie Voight, Vyan Abdullah and Nora Roberts each carded a 46 to complete the scoring. Addison Schinka finished just one shot back with a 47.

Ponies coach Philip Herder is encouraged by the potential for this team, but said they’re still working to become more consistent around the greens.

“After the first meet the girls knew what to expect a little bit more and they were more steady around the greens,” the coach said. “I think that’s something they’ve highlighted is that the short-game stuff is not where we’ve been at in the past.

“That’s just where we are in the season. In terms of scores, we were a little bit better than Prestwick (in the SEC opener) and I think in terms of where we are in the conference there’s quite a few teams within 15 strokes of each other.”

East Ridge, meanwhile, appears to be in late-season form after placing six players among the top eight. Cretin-Derham Hall’s Lily Vincelli claimed medalist honors with a 37.

“They are a really deep team and it’s a good challenge for us to compete with them,” Herder said.

Ponies fourth at Prestwick

At Woodbury, after having its scheduled season opener postponed, the Ponies opened the season with a fourth-place finish in an 18-hole conference match on Thursday, April 18 at Prestwick Golf Club.

East Ridge pulled away from the field with a winning total of 319 while Mounds View (361), White Bear Lake (362), Stillwater (371) and Cretin-Derham Hall (377) completed the top five.

“It was a very windy day and the weather has played a factor, but our short game is something that will take some time,” Ponies coach Philip Herder said. “It was about what we expected. It’s always a challenge at the beginning of the year and hard to know where everyone is at when some of the girls hitting at the golf dome or on a simulator. That will come along as the season goes on.”

Sam Schinka shot 91 and Addison Schinka was one shot back with a 92 to lead the way for Stillwater. Vyan Abdullah turned in a 93 and Kylie Voight completed the scoring with a 95, which was one shot better than teammate Nora Roberts (96).

Led by individual medalist Ella Whinnery with a 75, East Ridge placed four players among the top five.
