The Stillwater synchronized swimming team wrapped up at least a share of yet another East Metro Conference championship with a 36-9 routines meet victory over Osseo/Maple Grove/Park Center on Tuesday, April 23 at Stillwawter Middle School.

The Ponies improved to 5-0 with just one dual meet remaining this season. After hosting its Water Show at SMS on Saturday, May 4, Stillwater is scheduled to close out the regular season at rival Forest Lake on Tuesday, May 7.

Stillwater defeated the Rangers earlier this season and can claim the conference title outright with a victory in the finale. Forest Lake placed third at state a year ago and remains the only team to tie or defeat the Ponies in a dual meet since at least 1989. Stillwater is 230-3-1 in dual meets during that time.

“We are having a great season,” Ponies coach Kathy Henderson said.

After finishing 3-0 in its figures meets to start the season, Stillwater defeated Columbia Heights 37-10 on April 18 and followed with the victory over Osseo/Maple Grove/Park Center.

The Ponies placed first in all events against Osseo/Maple Grove/Park Center.

Hailey Schmit (78.7333) and Megan Johnson (66.9667) finished 1-2 for the Ponies in the solo while Paige Schmitt joined Hailey to win the duet with a score of 81.3333. Kate Jentink, Johnson and Elaina Lokken also won the trio and the Ponies prevailed comfortably in the team division with a winning total of 78.1000.

“We have a short break from competitions in the coming week, but now we focus on preparing for our annual show,” Henderson said of the Water Show. “The show is a great tradition this team has for displaying all our routines for friends and family. The Stillwater synchronized swimming team goes back to 1953 and we are lucky to carry on the legacy.”

• Stillwater also competed in a 13-team JV invitational (short division) at Edina on Saturday, April 20. In addition outscoring Wayzata 60.767-59.133 in the team competition, the Ponies placed first in the trio category with Avery Cook, Morgaine Fitzgerald and Riley Schmitt earning a score of 56.233.

“Our JV/short division has a wide range of swimmers who are brand new to the sport, alongside a few who have had club experience,” Henderson said. “They are a great group of motivated athletes.”
