Randall’s Kaden Juarez (10) catches a fly ball in a 4A Regional Semifinal game against Wichita Falls, May 27, 2023, at Hodgetown, in Amarillo, Texas. Randall won 6-0.

For the first time in 32 games, the Randall baseball team tasted defeat on Thursday night.

Playing a team they defeated 10-2 earlier this season in Stephenville, the Raiders managed a late comeback attempt that fell just short as Stephenville took a 3-2 win and a 1-0 series lead in the 4A Region I Finals.

Stephenville managed to take a 2-0 advantage in the third and added another run in the sixth inning before the Raiders began to mount a rally. An RBI double by Blaine Brannon to score Dylan Ray cut the deficit to two before AJ Lucero's RBI groundout to score pinch runner OJ Beltran cut it to 3-2. Carson Haffner was walked and Payton Bush's double set up runners on second and third with two outs, but Logan Tice popped out to end the game.

Now, Randall will have to win two games on Friday to advance to its first state tournament since 2007. Game two has been moved up one hour to 10 a.m. in order to hopefully avoid afternoon showers. Game two and if needed game three will be played at Midland Greenwood.

Randall would join Nazareth as the only two teams representing the Panhandle at state if it were to advance. If not, it will be up to the Swifts to bring home the area's first UIL state championship in baseball since 1971 wen Dumas won. San Jacinto won a TAPPS state championship in baseball in 2019, but at the UIL level only the Demons have taken it all from the area.
