A 59-year-old Stafford man was arrested yesterday after making the decision to drive drunk while in possession of a firearm.

On June 6th at approximately 12:12 a.m., deputies responded to Warrenton Road for a reckless driver complaint. The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office informed the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office of a vehicle entering from their county that was swerving, and nearly struck a tractor trailer.

Deputy S.T. Myers was at the intersection of Warrenton Road and Cedar Grove Road when he observed the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was traveling 60 MPH in a 45 MPH zone, was failing to maintain the lane of travel, and nearly struck a median. Deputy Myers, having witnessed the poor driving behaviors, initiated a traffic stop as Deputy D.S. Jett responded to assist.

From several feet away, Deputy Jett could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath. He also had glassy eyes and slurred speech. When asked how much he had to drink, the driver couldn’t remember due to his level of intoxication. He was also in possession of a concealed firearm.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content greater than .2, as well as, carrying a concealed weapon while intoxicated. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
