A parent and 10-year-old child are both in trouble with the law after the elder encouraged the younger to pepper spray her adversaries during a scuffle in Stafford County on Thursday, May 25, a spokesperson with the sheriff's office said.

The argument broke out at a Shasta Place apartment complex around 8:30 p.m.

The parent told the child to go inside and get her pepper spray, and returned back outside with it, police said.

"A blast of the inflammatory agent to her adversary led to a law enforcement response," authorities said in a release. "Several people at the scene received a washout from rescue personnel."

Deputies obtained a warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor for the parent. A juvenile petition was requested for assault for the juvenile pepper sprayer. Additionally, a protective order was obtained to limit contact between the adversaries.
