Casper gives back to Billy and Mia
CASPER — Billy Welch was mere feet away from where he and his iconic dog Mia were recognized by Casper’s mayor fewer than three weeks before, but his mood reflected the overcast and glum weather that took over the city this week. On Sept. 22, Welch and his dog Mia were in high spirits. Days later, Mayor Ray Pacheco would offer the pair a plaque recognizing their years of charitable work in Casper’s community, offering Mia’s likeness and love to those in need. Seated on a worn green couch toward the back of Metro Coffee on David Street, Welch recounted a chapter of his career that came to an end on Oct. 13: A two-plus year stretch of employment at the west-side Walmart, where Mia’s unique outfits earned her recognition that the two levied to lend their support to businesses, fundraisers, festivals and Casperites. During an exchange of pleasantries, Welch said he felt “good” that morning, but a few frank words demonstrated a loss greater than many would expect. An introvert by habit, the combination of a public-facing position and his canine companion offered Welch connection to his community that had been missing for about a year, since he moved

Misfit Creations gives local artists a place to start
CASPER, Wyo. — On the lower level of downtown Casper’s Atrium Plaza, tucked beneath a colored lamp in a shop called Misfit Creations, sits a unicorn skull. The curious artwork, and the shop, belongs to 22-year-old Casper native Nevaeh Raba. The skull — actually that of a horse — used to belong to her step-grandfather. Where others might have seen a commonplace object for a place like Wyoming, Raba found inspiration after spotting a wasp nest in the brain cavity during a cleaning.
