SPRINGFIELD, OHIO (WKEF/WRGT) - The 36-hole qualifier for the US Open is referred to as the "Longest Day in Golf," and Monday at Springfield Country Club provided justification to that nickname.
More than 70 golfers played two 18-hole rounds, hoping to claim one of five berths at next week's major championship in Los Angeles. Three qualified on their 36-hole scores, while three more went into a playoff for the remaining two openings.
Dylan Wu birdied the first playoff hole to take the fourth opening, while Alex Schaake and Maxwell Moldovan ultimately played eight playoff holes. On the par-5 17th hole, Schaake made birdie to clinch a berth in the US Open. Moldovan will be first alternate from Springfield, while Vincent Whaley is the second alternate.
The complete list of qualifiers is: Sam Stevens (Eastborough, Kansas), Taylor Pendrith (Canada), Nick Hardy (Northbrook, Illinois), Dylan Wu (Medford, Oregon), and Alex Schaake (Omaha, Nebraska).
The 2023 US Open begins June 15 at Los Angeles Country Club; it's the first time the course will have hosted a major championship.
