SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission has announced that the work on the Connecticut River Crossing project is now complete.
The barges and cranes have been removed from the river to protect critical seasonal fish and wildlife activity during spring.
The project started in 2019 to replace some water infrastructure including installing three new river-crossing pipes. One pipe is from the ’70s, and another one is from 1938, and they’ve been in continuous use since then. They’re also replacing the York Street Pump Station.
22News got an inside look at the New York Street pump station before its officially put to use. Katie Shea is with the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission, she said the $137 million project will allow them to better move waste from the pump station to the treatment plant on Bondi’s Island and that will reduce how much goes into the river.
“By the time the York Street Pump project is completed, we will have reduced CSO discharges into the Connecticut River by 50% since we first started our remediation efforts back in the 90’s.”
They will be finishing remediation work on the river banks and working towards the completion of the York Street Pump Station later this summer.
